‘Asian Cinema Retrospective 2016’ to end this month

‘Asian Cinema Retrospective 2016’ to end this month

Moviyana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) have jointly organised a 17-week ‘Asian Cinema Retrospective 2016’ on the BSA premises. The festival features a total number of 65 films from 19 countries. Beginning from July 16, the four-month event will end this month. The session of this month will take place on Friday and Saturday from 4pm at the International Digital Cultural Archive Room of National Theatre Hall, BSA. Every week during the event, three films will be featured, alongside discussions.
The session of this month ‘Asian Cinema Retrospective’ will start today with the screening of Bangladeshi film ‘Surja Dighal Bari’ directed and produced by Sheikh Niamat Ali and Masihuddin Shaker. Based on Abu Ishaque’s 1955 novel of the same title, the film ‘Surja Dighal Bari’ was the first film made by the Government of Bangladesh grant. The film is about a poor family returns to their village from Dhaka after The Great Bengal Femine of 1943. This movie centers on their struggling life during the World War II period. The cast of the film includes Dolly Anowar, Rawshan Zamil, ATM Shamsuzzaman, Sitara Begum, Syed Hasan Imam, Fakrul Hasan Boiragi, Nazmul Huda Bachchu, Elora Gahar and others. On the other hand,  a Japanese drama film ‘Tokyo Story’ directed by Yasujirō Ozu will be screened today, while a Pakistani film ‘Bol’ directed and produced by Shoaib Mansoor will be screened tomorrow. This month, the festival will feature five documentaries and five feature films. Besides screening Bangladeshi films, the festival will also screen films from India, Pakistan, China, Japan and Iran.
