Cow rearing helps achieve self-reliance in Barguna

BARGUNA: About one thousand distressed families of char areas in six upazilas of the district have achieved economic self-reliance by rearing cows, reports BSS. According to local sources, most of the people, who do not have lands to cultivate paddy, vegetables or other crops, are taking the opportunity of rearing cows as a profession.
The char people both man and women have taken training from different government organisations (GOs) and non government organisations (NGOs) on rearing cattle.
Maya Rani, 40, an inhabitant of Amtali municipality, has been rearing cows for the last five years. She has already sold four cows for Taka one lakh and is expecting to sell other two oxen at Taka 90 thousand.
Abdur Rahaman, 50, said he has five cattle and he used to let those graze in the char area from early morning to late afternoon. “I want to buy more cows with financial support extended from any quarter,” Rahman added.
Barguna Zila Parisad Chairman Alhaj Jahangir Kabir said the socio-economic condition of the char people, who used to lead their lives in an extreme miserable condition, have changed their economic fate significantly by rearing cattle.
After achieving economic self-reliance, the people of the area are now expecting to contribute their maximum efforts to make their children educated, Kabir said.
