depression in Bay

Signal 3 for sea ports

Special Correspondent

A depression brewed off a low pressure in the south Andaman sea on Wednesday led to high winds blowing over the north Bay of Bengal since yesterday afternoon that prompted the Met Office to lower the warning signal number 1 and hoist number 3 for the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’sBazar, Mongla and Payra. Met source said convective clouds were gathering in the north Bay as a result of the depression that was based in the north west Bay and moving in north westward direction. There is every possibility of a storm breeding out of the depression if it turns into a deep depression which usually intensifies into a cyclone. In that case, this would be the second cyclone in the Bay since the cyclone ‘Kyant’ that was born on October 23. Meanwhile, a little rain in the late afternoon over the city after a sultry day caught many people by surprise as the day earlier had plenty of sunshine with a fierce sun blazing through the streets that pushed the mercury to 34.5 degrees Celsius yesterday. It came so surprisingly that commuters on the last day of the week could not get a chance of relief but to wet themselves as no none had about carrying an umbrella like the students and office goers desperately trying to avail a place in the crowded buses or seek mercy of the rickshawpeddlers or their higher cousins the auto-rickshaw drivers. The rain was brought in by the depression in the north west Bay. The Met Office forecast more showers during the next 24 hours beginning at 6pm yesterday that may bring down the day temperatures slightly but may lead to a warm night as the depression graduates gradually to a cyclone from a deep depression. Meanwhile, the Met Office in its long-range forecast for November said there would be at least two cyclones formed out of 2-3 low pressures.
