All eyes will be locked on the new sensation Mehedi Hasan Miraj as he is set to make his debut in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), a most glamorous and competitive tournament in the domestic circuit that rolls onto the ground today. Mehedi, a category B player is acquired by Rajshahi Kings at an amount of Tk. 18 lakh during the players’ draft of the BPL and there was not much talk about him. But within a month of time, he snatched all the limelight to bring the Rajshahi Kings itself to the fore. The 19-year old is now a new star in the country following his record-breaking19-wicket haul in the two-match Test series against England. His performance helped the side achieve their biggest Test victory in the country’s cricket history.
But while his longer version form was eye-catching, there was talk whether he could translate the performance to the newest format of the cricket which is considered as more than a batsman’s game. Can Mehedi resist the batsmen from plundering him—that was the question that is now hovering around.
Mehedi’s side will take on Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s Comilla Victorians, the defending champion of the tournament. And Mashrafe’s shrewd captaincy is well known. The man is the behind of Bangladesh’s stunning revolution in world cricket and so the fans kept finger crossed how he neutralizes the new kid on the block.
“He is an exciting talent. I have been watching him for long. I saw him working hard and he reaped the rewards. There are players who just come to play in the national team and there are players who come to stay here to give the side service for long. Mehedi and Mustafizur are such sort of players who are here to give the team a service for at least 10 years. They would change the face of the Bangladesh’s cricket. What I said about Mustafizur is now proved and I believe Mehedi would also prove me right,” Mashrafe said of Mehedi.
Mehedi’s captain Darren Sammy, the captain who won the World T20 title for West Indies also expected the golden arm of the teen-ager would lead them to the title.
“I have seen his bowling against England on TV screen. He is too young but he is matured. He has taken the responsibility and earned accolades for the team. I believe he would do big for Rajshahi also. I am excited to be the captain of such rare talent,” Sammy said.
Mehedi took the country by storm during the Tests against England now will face a new challenge in the shortest format of the game. The question remains whether he can adjust to this format. Coach Chandika Hathurusingha had made it clear earlier this week that Mehedi will not have much of a chance to play in the ODIs in the near future because his bowling is appropriate for Tests and he does not want to spoil that. Only time will tell how effective the former Under-19 captain will be in T20s.
