Mashrafe Bin Mortaza stressed on to seize the momentum from the first match as his side takes on Rajshahi Kings in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) opener today at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Mashrafe who is the catalyst behind Bangladesh’s stunning revolution remains the only captain to touch the BPL title in all previous three formats. He made Dhaka Gladiators champion for the first two editions of the league as a captain and continued the trend by leading Comilla Victorians champion in the third edition. A mediocre team likes Comilla whom most of the people wrote off, Mashrafe led by exemplary to take the glory. Comilla Victorians this time got a power-packed team and is one of the contenders for the titles and when Mashrafe is captain, most of the people bet on the team to be champions.
Mashrafe however didn’t think that his lady luck is anything to do with it; instead he preferred to gain a momentum from the first ball of the match.
“The first match is very important. You need to get off to a good start. If we get the momentum, the task will be easier,” he told the reporters.
While the Mashrafe’s chance to clinch the trophy as captain for the fourth straight time has been in the center of the discussion, the captain ruled it out saying, he doesn’t set his eye that far as of now.
“The tournament couldn’t start as of now but you are thinking about my fourth title! Time is not ripe to think about that. We have to play well in the group phase first and then we’ll think about it.”
The most glamorous tournament of the domestic circuit rolls onto the ground at a moment when Bangladesh cricket has grabbed a biggest victory of its cricket history. The enthusiasm was unarguably high. Almost all of the foreign players have already landed Bangladesh, shutting the mouth of the critics who were vocal about Bangladesh’s security.
The Government and Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) have given such security to the England cricket which earned a huge praise from the world cricket fraternity. Even the ECB gave BCB and Bangladesh special thanks. Still there was apprehension whether some of the players would arrive in the country but the smooth completion of Bangladesh and England series bolstered the players and their family’s confidence.
The BPL governing council however said they would give the players a high level of security but it won’t be a state level security like what the England cricket team got.
“It won’t be state level security and the security will be tight,” BPL member secretary IH Mallick said.
Unlike England team, the players will stay at different hotels which raised an apprehension that whether the BCB could give them a security simultaneously but Mallick said, “We have organised ICC world T20 and gave security to 26 teams at a time. So I don’t think it would be a problem at all.”
Abul Khair Group became the title sponsor of the BPL, a tournament which will be broadcasted in 122 countries, said the governing council.
During the announcement of title sponsor, apart from Mallick, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and Abul Khair Group Marketing and Brand Director Nawshad Karim Chowdhury were also present.
Mallick said the tournament will be stepping stone to keep the country’s cricket ahead aftermath of the great success of the country. According to him, the local players will be benefited immensely from the tournament in what was highly competitive and glamorous after IPL.
However what Mashrafe believed is that his local players should come all guns blazing as he is not too keen onto rely on the overseas players.
“We have got some exciting players. We have players coming from Under-19 level. They have to play to their potential. T20 is such format that you won’t get much time to take decision. So we need to decide quickly what we want to do on the ground. If we can do these things properly, we stand on a good chance to win it again.”
Like Mashrafe his opposite number Darren Sammy, the captain of Rajshahi Kings also pointed about gaining the momentum.
Sammy however is aware of the wealthy record of Mashrafe as captain in the local and international cricket.
“He has a great brain. He is sensible and could take shrewd decision on the field to take the match in his side’s favour. He is a good human being also. I know his team is very strong. We are new one in the tournament but if we can execute our plan well, we can beat Mashrafe’s team,” Sammy said.
In the day’s other match, Khulna Titans will face off Rangpur Riders.
