The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Commission (BTRC) to restore mobile operator Citycell’s spectrum without delay.
However, the apex court has also asked Citycell to pay its dues of Tk 100 crore to the BTRC by November 19.
If the mobile operator fails to pay the dues of Tk 100 crore to the BTRC by November 19, the telecom regulator can cancel its spectrum again, the apex court order said.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Citycell, seeking to get back its spectrum.
The Appellate Division also formed a three-member committee, headed by Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, to settle the dispute between BTRC and Citycell over its due payment.
Prof Choudhury is the vice chancellor of University of Asia Pacific. The committee was asked to settle the issue within a month.
It also fixed Tk. 5 lakh as honorarium to the committee chief and Tk. 2.5 lakh each to the other members of the committee. It asked both the parties—Citycell and the BTRC—to bear the honorarium payments.
