A 3-day international conference on ‘Shakespeare: Four Hundred Years After’ began on Thursday at IUB Auditorium at Bashundhara in the capital, says a press release.
The Department of English of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is being organising this conference.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was the chief guest while Dr Gowher Rizvi, International Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the special guest. The Minister noted how during his incarceration on Robben Island for over twenty years, Nelson Mandela kept a copy of the Collected Works of William Shakespeare in his cell, and read its contents several times over.
Renowned Shakespeare scholar, Professor Imtiaz Habib of Old Dominion University, USA presented the keynote paper on ‘Bengal in Shakespeare’s India: The Critical Archaeology of a Dark Historical Narrative in Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the inaugural ceremony of the conference. Rashed Chowdhury, chairman, Board of Trustees, IUB, Professor M Omar Rahman, Vice-Chancellor, IUB, Dr Mahbub Alam, Dean, SLASS, IUB, Towhid Bin Muzaffar, head, Department of English, IUB and Professor Niaz Zaman, Advisor, Department of English, IUB also spoke on the occasion. The conference will round off by staging late Syed Shamsul Haq’s adopted Bangla version of Macbeth, on Saturday (November 5) to be performed by Padatik Nattya Sangsad.
