Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) hosted a 15-day drama workshop on its premises as a part of year-long celebrations, organised by Theatre and Film Department of BSA, to mark the 450th birth anniversary and the 400th death anniversary of noted poet, playwright and actor William Shakespeare.

Led by prominent theatre personality Ataur Rahman, the 15-day workshop titled ‘Shakespeare’s Drama: Content, features and performance style’ was held with 80 trainees from October 14 to 29. During the workshop, divided into five teams, trainees later staged the selected parts of five of Shakespeare’s greatest stage productions ‘Merchant of Venice’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Othello’, ‘Tempest’ and ‘Taming of the Shrew’.
The closing ceremony of the workshop, featuring certificate distribution and staging drama, took place on October 30 at the Music and Dance Centre auditorium of BSA. Presided over by BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was present as chief guest, while prominent theatre personality ‘Manchasarathi’ Ataur Rahman and Professor Abdus Selim were present as special guests.
After the closing ceremony, the parts of two of Shakespearean dramas trained in the workshop, ‘Merchant of Venice’ translated by Professor Abdus Selim and ‘Macbeth’ translated by recently-demised Syed Shamsul Haq, were staged on October 30 at the same venue.
The parts of three other plays ‘Othello’ translated by Munier Chowdhury, ‘Tempest’ translated by Syed Shamsul Haq and ‘Taming of the Shrew’ translated by  Munier Chowdhury were staged on October 31 at the Studio Theatre Hall of Shilpakala.
