The World Standards Cooperation (WSD) #speakstandards video competition recently invited entrants to develop 15-second videos demonstrating how difficult life would be without international standards. The winning video was decided by a vote receiving more than 4,500 votes.
1st place: ‘No Standard Film’
Khaled Md Shariful Islam from Bangladesh took first prize in the #speakstandards video competition. He describes his video as showing that “it is impossible to live or get anything done without the help of international standards. Be it operating a complex modern digital video camera, or simply sketching an image with a pencil, standards are required for things to function properly and smoothly.”
Khaled is a creative director and strategist, and also teaches advertising at a university.
Using pencil-drawn sketches, the video describes how the illustrator aimed to create a video without the use of a camera to portray a world without any international standards. As the film progresses, the illustrator realizes that his pencil, too, conforms to international standards.
Showing that he couldn’t make the video without using standards, the filmmaker shows the audience that almost everything we do is built on international standards.
2nd place: ‘Toy’s safety standard’
Anna Orbeli from Armenia took second place with a video demonstrating the importance of safety standards to toys.
Anna’s video comes from personal experience. “My mother luckily saved my little brother’s life from Yo-Yo water ball intoxication, because the product wasn’t patented and didn’t conform to safety standards,” Anna explains, adding that, “After that day, I have paid attention to each toy’s label before buying it.”
Anna is the founder of “Orbeli production” and strives to tell great stories that are “fun and comedic, told with a level of sophistication and irreverence that appeals to the broadest audience possible and captures the imaginations of all people regardless of age.”
Anna wants to remind all parents that, when selecting toys, the most important aspect of the buying decision is to ensure that the toys were constructed in conformance with trusted standards for quality and safety.
3rd place: ‘Customer Satisfaction Standards’
Third place went to Anna Orbeli, Shant Rubinyants & Karo Galoyan from Orbeli production, an Armenian team of animators.
Their video highlights customer-service standards to remind businesses in all sectors that standards help them to retain customers by creating an environment open to feedback on how to improve customer service.
The team met during their internship at UNDPI Armenia in 2014. After participating in last year’s #speakstandards video competition and winning the 2nd place, the team members say that they started to pay more attention to the importance of standards.
“We like this competition very much, and ready to participate every year, regardless of the results. There are a lot of interesting and important standards in the world, giving us enough reason to participate in the competition for the rest of our lives!”
4th place: ‘Spoon’
Fourth prize was taken by a team ofh six from Columbia made up of Johana Sánchez, John Higuera, Andrés Felipe Berrío, Daniela Estrada, Frank Higuera and Sebastian Rojas.
“We tried to show the importance of the units of measurement in the field of medicine and possible situations that have no quality standards could affect our lives,” said the group leader, Johana Sánchez.
In their professional lives, the team members are filmmakers working with commercials, virtual reality, augmented reality, 360 video and photography, and interactive videos. They are part of the audiovisual department of Higuera Studios, and their passion is to create and produce engaging, high-quality content.
