The High Court yesterday ordered the two city corporations of Dhaka to remove banners and festoons immediately after these were pasted on various roads, footpaths and road islands of the capital, reports UNB.
An HC bench comprising Justice M Rezaul Haque and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar also directed the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to continue their activities to remove all unauthorised billboards, posters, banners and archways, and wipe out all graffiti on walls in areas under their jurisdiction.
The court came up with the order disposing of a rule issued by it in this regard.Advocate M Shahjahan stood for the city corporations while Advocate Minhazul Islam argued for the writ petitioner, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), and Deputy Attorney General M Khurshid Alam represented the state.Talking to reporters, Khurshid Alam said the court ordered the removal of all kinds of unauthorised banners and festoons from the capital.On March 18, 2012, the HC delivered an interim order to remove the unauthorised posters, banners and archways from the capital following a petition filed by Bela and issued a rule seeking explanation from the government.
On August 18 last, the HC ordered the two city corporations of the capital to remove all the unauthorised posters, banners and archways, and wipe out all writings on walls by August 22.
Later, the authorities of the two city corporations submitted a report to the HC mentioning that they accomplished 90 percent of the job.
