Unidentified miscreants vandalised idols of Hindu goddesses Durga and Kali and made away with gold ornaments and valuables from a family temple at Chowdhury Hat under Hathazari police station in Chittagong early Tuesday.
Dulal Dey, priest of Dashamahavidya Temple where the stealing took place, said that he found its two doors broken and hands of goddess Durga and Kali damaged when he came to the temple for prayers yesterday morning. “Gold ornaments adorning the goddesses were also missing,” he said.
“Miscreants made away with about two bharis of gold ornaments and Tk 12,000- 13,000 in cash from the temple’s vault,” said Rimon Muhuri, general secretary of Hathazari upazila Puja Udjapon Committee.
“The miscreants also vandalised the idols. The temple was also looted in 2008. We have filed a case with Hathazari police station. Police visited the spot. The criminals should be brought to book,” demanded Muhuri.
Contacted, Belal Uddin Jahangir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station, said, “It is merely an incident of stealing. The thieves have stolen the valuables from the temple. We are investigating into the matter and trying to nab the thieves.”
