The MP from Teknaf-Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar, Abdur Rahman Badi, allegedly amassed a fortune by flexing his political muscles. According to his last affidavit, his income had swelled 351 times and his amassed wealth 19 times in the five years since he became the MP. He became the highest tax payer in Cox’s Bazar, but allegedly only because of his cross-border smuggling trade. He owns more than five houses in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar town, and in Dhaka. He even has a tree house.

Son of former BNP leader Ezahar, Badi was once active in BNP politics. He clinched a BNP nomination for the Teknaf-Ukhia seat in 1996. But the party later withdrew it. He also served as the mayor of Teknaf. He later joined the Awami League to be elected an MP. Badi’s fortunes changed overnight with Teknaf becoming a land port. He controls everything landing there—legally or illegally. His relatives, too, allegedly control many of these ‘dealings’.
Logs coming illegally from Myanmar turn ‘legal’ on arrival at Teknaf on the completion of certain ‘rules’. Badi and his relatives allegedly control the entire trade.
Although Badi has no files at the local tax office, according to his tax returns in 2008, his annual income was Tk. 210,480 and the total assets were worth Tk. 4,779,889. In the affidavit filed before the January 5 elections, his annual income had jumped to Tk. 73,939,808. His total assets were worth Tk. 91,967,565. In the last five years, there has been a massive change in the value of his immovable and movable assets.
There is no end to allegations against Badi and his relatives, including dealing in the dangerous drug Yaba. The list of Yaba dealers prepared by the narcotics department includes Badi and his nine relatives. These nine are his brother Abdul Shukkur, and Maulvi Mujibur Rahman, two stepbrothers Abdul Amin and Faisal Rahman, his in-laws Akhtar Kamal, and Shahed Kamal, uncle Haider Ali, cousin Kamrul Islam Russel, and nephew Nipu.
Badi, however, had rubbished the allegations before the media.
Along with his 26 relatives, he is alleged to be the chief patron of a human trafficking racket and legalisation of Rohingyas.
Badi topped the list of 79 human traffickers in Teknaf prepared by the home ministry in September 2014. In December the same year, a police investigation marked eight of his relatives as human traffickers.
Badi also topped the list of people who allegedly help Rohingyas to be listed as voters and get their national IDs. These lists were sent to the Election Commission from the Prime Minister’s Office in October 2013.
There are many other allegations against the controversial lawmaker. He has allegedly assaulted common people and even government officials, as well as 19 distinguished persons. The list includes former executive engineer of roads and highways of Cox’s Bazar, Abdul Halim, former UNO of Ukhia, Golamur Rahman, assistant land commissioner of Cox’s Bazar and executive magistrate, Abdur Rahman, Teknaf freedom fighter Golam Mostafa, head teacher of Teknaf Shamlapur High School, Abul Manzur, teachers of Teknaf Municipal Primary School, Abdul Jalil and Pulin Dey, Cox’s Bazar lawyer Rakhal Mitra, assistant manager of Islami Bank of Teknaf, Giasuddin, Teknaf forest beat officer Mujibul Huq, head teacher of Sabrang High School, Mofiz Daulanta, businessmen of Teknaf land port Md Anwar and Mir Kamruzzaman, Cox’s Bazar contractor Atiqual Islam and constable of Cox’s Bazar court, Ratan.
