Rajshahi University (RU), which many people believe was the crib of the Liberation War, is yet to get a research cell on that historic incident.
The present administration had taken such an initiative, but the project never saw the light of day due to lack of funds, sources alleged. As a result, teachers, researchers and students of the university face a lot of hurdles studying the history of the Liberation War.
Professor Safiqunnabi Samadi, the administrator of the Rajshahi University (RU), central library, said, “The university authorities planned to set up a Liberation War Research Cell next to the magazine section in the library. But we couldn't collect the required funds, which stopped the work.”
“Two outsiders wanted to sponsor the project. But they are yet to pay the money,” he added.
Another source at the library said the initial estimated cost to set up the Liberation War cell was Tk. 25.83 lakh.
Funds will be needed to collect books on Liberation War affairs, newspapers, journals, booklets, audiovisual sources (information, images, documentaries and music), machinery and furniture. The central library has enough manpower to initially manage the cell.
Sources said that in 1998, the then vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdul Khaleq, had a bookshelf added to the library with thousands of books on the Liberation War. But it is apparently lost.
On March 20, 2013, the present administration decided to set up a full-fledged cell on the Liberation War.
A Liberation War researcher alleged that funds meant for different projects were being used for all kinds of development work of the varsity, including infrastructure development of the administrative building.
Rajshahi University (RU), vice-chancellor Professor  Muhammed Mizanuddin said, “The issue of introducing a Liberation War Research Cell was discussed in the last senate session.
We sought financial help from two external institutions.
Since we did not get the money, we've decided to introduce the cell by using internal resources of the university.
