Speakers at a workshop in the capital yesterday stressed the need for reducing disaster risk in educational institutions aiming to save students from all possible disasters, including earthquake and cyclone, reports UNB.
They said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, which accelerate disaster risk here, and that is why a framework for disaster risk reduction in education is a must to cope with future disasters.
Directorate for Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) under the Education Ministry with technical assistance from Save the Children arranged the national workshop on Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Education and Education in Emergencies (EiE) at Cirdap auditorium in the capital. Chaired by DSHE director General Prof Dr SM Wahiduzzaman, the workshop was addressed, among others, by Education secretary Md Sohorab Hossain, programme officer of ECHO Abdul Awal and acting sector director (Education) of Save the Children Lina Gertsch. Sohorab Hossain said a framework for disaster risk reduction in education will help the government combat future disasters efficiently as Bangladesh is prone to extreme climatic events and disasters.
He said the participants of this workshop are key stakeholders of secondary education and he expected highest output from them to finalise the framework for disaster risk reduction in education. Representatives from European Commission, different NGOs and UN organisations and teachers took part at the workshop.
The European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) under its eight Disaster Preparedness Action Plan (DIPECHO-8) has been funding the action - Learning Resilience: Institutionalising School Disaster Management (SDM) in the education sector in Bangladesh.
