Chairman of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood yesterday warned that all the influential graft suspects will be brought to justice, reports UNB.
“I would like to equivocally say that the people involved in corruption, no matter they’re influential or not, will be brought to justice…they won’t be able to escape,” he told a press briefing at the Commission’s media centre in the capital.
The ACC chief said the Commission is working independently to fight corruption as no influential people came to the ACC head office to put pressure on him since he has taken over charge of the Commission in March this year. According to ACC data provided at the press briefing, a total of 188 graft cases filed by the ACC were settled in court in 2015 while accused were convicted in only 69 cases, showing a conviction rate of 37 per cent. Some 158 graft cases have been disposed of in court as of October 2016 while accused got punishment in 80 cases. The conviction rate of graft cases was 51 per cent.
“We acknowledge that we couldn’t take the conviction rate to a satisfactory level due to our limitation. That’s why we must improve our performance in probes,” Mahmood said.
But, he said, the scenario is changing day by day after the Commission launched a move to reorganise its prosecution panel. “The conviction rate in graft cases has increased in 2016.”
Replying to a question about the conviction of ruling party MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, the ACC chairman said he would not make any comment on any matter of court. “But, we want to see that all the graft suspects get punishment in graft cases.”
