An activist of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was gunned down by a gang of criminals at Begaritala in Manirampur upazila of the district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman, 34, activist of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal and son of former UP member Anwar Hossain of Lauri village in Manirampur upazila.
Biplab Kumar Nath, officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station, said two groups of criminals one led by Mizan-Mahfuz and another by Anisur exchanged gunfire over establishing supremacy in the area on Tuesday night.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered Anisur’s blood-stained body. Later, he was taken to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 2 am.
Anisur was wanted in Krishak League leader Kamal and Juba League activist Shaheen murder cases, said Biplab Kumar.
Meanwhile, victim’s family members alleged that police picked up Anisur from his residence early Monday.
Babul Akhter, cousin of Anisur Rahman, said Anisur was picked up from his residence in Lauri village by plain clothes policemen.
Shahid Iqbal Hossain, president of upazila unit BNP, said “Anisur was an activist of Juba Dal”.
Police also recovered one pipe gun and two rounds of bullets from the spot.
