Volunteers should remain ready to face disasters
anytime: Jhantu

RANGPUR: Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has said the community level urban volunteers should remain ready to face natural disasters anytime to reduce losses of human lives and properties, reports BSS. “There is no alternative to early preparedness and ensuring efficient emergency response through community-based disaster management systems to reduce risks of natural disasters like earthquake,” he said.
The City Mayor, also a valiant freedom fighter, was addressing concluding ceremony of the ‘Volunteer Convention- 2016’ organised by ‘Pollishree’ with RpCC assistance at Town Hall premises here on Sunday as chief guest. Earlier, Jhantu inaugurated the day-long convention by releasing balloons.
A total of 120 ward level trained male and female youth volunteers from four wards of the city participated in the convention arranged under ‘Enhancing Inclusive Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh’ project with Oxfam funding.
The National Alliance for Risk Reduction & Response Initiatives Consortium has been cooperating in implementing the project to institutionalise Community-based Disaster Management Preparedness Model at ward levels.
With Secretary of RpCC Fazlul Kabir in the chair, Additional District Magistrate AKM Maruf Hassan and Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu addressed the occasion as special guests.
Project Coordinator of ‘Pollishree’ Shahanaz Parveen informed that the participating 120 volunteers with 30 from each from Ward Nos-18, 24, 26 and 30 of the city were provided training on disaster managements.
Expert trainers of Fire Service and Civil Defense conducted training courses for the youth volunteers to enhance their skill and efficiency for post- earthquake managements.
“The urban volunteers were provided practical training for conducting post earthquake emergency rescue operations, providing first aids and fire extinguishing with maximum efficiency to reduce losses of human lives,” she said.
