500 drinking water fountains to be set up in DSCC: Mayor
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon yesterday said some 500 drinking water fountains will be set up in important places of the city along with modern public toilets, reports UNB.
The DSCC mayor made the announcement while inaugurating two public toilets in Osmani Uddyan. Khokon said, “I want to create a city without any illegal establishments. For this we need to be united.” WaterAid Bangladesh and H&M Foundation in association with Dhaka South City Corporation launched these public toilets on Monday. Swedish ambassador to Dhaka Johan Frisell and WaterAid Bangladesh Country Director Dr Md Khairul Islam, among others, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
Youth murdered in Ctg
A youth was slaughtered to death at Tamakundi Lane under Kotwali police station in Chittagong early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Md Nazim Uddin son of Mohammad Younus hailing from Gangaria of Satkania upazila in Chittagong. He used to work in a shoe shop of Rahmansion of Tamakundi lane. “We recovered a slit-throat the body of Nazim Uddin from a room fourth floor of Janata Market in Tamakundi Lane of Reazuddin Bazar at around 2am. On information we rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy,” said sub-inspector Sankar Talukdar of Kotwali police station.
Couple electrocuted in Rajshahi
A couple died and their two daughters were injured from electrocution at Morshedpur in Rajshahi early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Abul Kalam Abu, 55, a resident of the village, and his wife Farida Begum.
Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station, said Abul Kalam came in contact with an electrically charged fence wire, put around the house to protect the household poultry from jackals, when he went to the toilet early in the morning. Hearing his screams, his wife and his two daughters rushed there and tried to rescue him. At one stage, all the family members were electrocuted critically critically. Later, neighbours rescued them and took them to Bagha Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared the couple dead.
Body recovered in Sylhet
Police recovered the decomposed body of a youth from Sadipur area under Osmaninagar upazila in Sylhet yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Ripon, son of Shakib Miah, a resident of Sadipur Paschimhati village of the upazila. Being informed, police rushed to the spot at around 10 am and recovered the body from Sutarkhal River of the area. Later, the body was sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The body carried a mark injury on the head and it indicates that he was murdered, said Officer-in-Charge of Osmaninagar Thana Abdul Awal. Police arrested three people in this connection, he said.
Teenager stabbed to death
A teenager was stabbed to death allegedly by three of his friends in Jamalpur area under Boalia Model Police Station in Rajshahi city Sunday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Lala Mian, 17, son of Abul Kashem of Meherchandi Chalkpara area in the metropolis. Police arrested three other youths of the same area in connection with the killing incident. They are: Riazul Islam, 19, Sihab Ahmed, 18, and Shaheen, 20. Shahadat Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Police Station, said the three arrested youths allegedly stabbed Lala Mian on his back repeatedly while they were reportedly gambling there at around 12.30 pm. Local people rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared his death.
Two killed in Ctg road mishap
Two people were killed when a passengers bus collided head-on with a pickup van on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway in Aziznagar area under Lohagara upazila of the district on Sunday noon.
The deceased were identified as bus passenger Morshed Alam,36, and pickup van driver Osman Goni, 41, both hailing from Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar district. Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohazari Highway Police Camp, said the accident occurred when a Chittagong-bound passengers bus collided head-on with a Cox’s Bazar-bound pickup van in the area at about 1 pm, leaving Morshed and Osman dead on the spot.
