icddr,b’s emeritus scientist Dr Md Sirajul Islam has received this year’s ‘Rotary SEED Award 2016’ by the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka, says a press release.
Environmental microbiologist Dr Islam’s breakthrough discovery of Phytoplankton - mainly the blue green algae as the inter-epidemic reservoir of cholera, and consequent innovation of ‘Siraj Mixture’ to neutralise the algae to control cholera have been credited for this prestigious award.
Dr Islam has a long glorious career in research, dedicated to improve the quality of health of the people of Bangladesh and beyond.
Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman presented Dr Islam with the Gold Medal at a ceremony held at The Westin Dhaka on Saturday. Rotary District Governor Muhammad Ayub, President Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka Tawfiq Ali, Chairman of the Installation and SEED Award ceremony Khalid Hasan and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Islam shared the background of his research and innovation of Siraj Mixture. He shared his plan to open up orphanage with the award grants for the disadvantaged children of the village he is from.
