A legal notice was served on the police officers concerned to implement in 24 hours the High Court directive that had asked them to free roads and footpaths from Zero Point to Sadarghat in Dhaka.
Advocate Manzill Murshid, president of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), sent the legal notice to the officers-in-charge of Ramna, Bangshal, Kotwali and Sutrapur police stations stating that the High Court has been reportedly flouted by them as they did not implement its order to free the roads and footpaths from Zero Point to Sadarghat in Dhaka.
The notice said that there were heavy traffic jams in the roads due to illegal shops and unauthorised vehicles, as the HC order was not obeyed. In response to a writ petition, the HC on February 26, 2012 directed the police to take steps in 48 hours to facilitate easy movement of people and vehicles on the roads and footpaths from Zero Point to Sadarghat. It ruled that the authorities have to ensure that nobody will keep sand, rods and other materials, parked rickshaw-vans and carts and establish makeshift shops by occupying the road and footpaths and asked them to submit a progress report on the implementation of the order to the court in every 30 days. But, the HC order did not follow by the authorities concerned properly, Manzil said. He also said that he would move with a contempt of court petition before the High Court against the OCs if they do not take steps to implement the 2012 HC directive.
