Bangladesh has sought support from the international community to make the forthcoming Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit, to be held in Dhaka in December, a success by ensuring high-level officials’ participation, reports UNB.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque briefed diplomats stationed in Dhaka and representatives of the UN agencies over the preparation of the Summit at state guesthouse Padma yesterday afternoon.
The Foreign Secretary, also Chair of the GFMD 2016, asked the dip-lomats and representatives from the UN agencies, international and regional bodies to communicate with their respective headquarters for ensuring high-level officials’ participation in the Summit.
“We’re actually asked to communicate with our headquarters for participation higher-ranking officials at Summit,” a diplomat from East Asian country who attended the briefing told the news agency over phone.
Foreign Ministry sources said all the countries have already received invitations from the Foreign Ministry.
Some of the countries confirmed their participation while few countries are yet to come up with confirmation.
The ninth GFMD Summit is scheduled to be held in Dhaka on December 10-12 under the overarching theme, “Migration that Works for Sustainable Development for All: Towards a Transformative Migration Agenda.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the Summit on December 10, said an official at the foreign ministry.
After the inauguration ceremony, the GFMD 2016 Common Space—for governments, international organisations, civil society, private sector and other non-state partners - will follow.
This will serve as the principal occasion for interaction between the Governments and global Civil Society and other relevant stakeholders.
Intensive Roundtable discussions
and the special sessions on the GFMD Platform for Partnerships and the Future of the Forum will take place on December 11-12.
A report on the outcomes of these sessions will be made during the closing ceremony on December 12.
Bangladesh and Germany, as consecutive Chairs of the GFMD, are working jointly to chart a common roadmap for the upcoming GFMD Summit. Germany will take over as chair from Bangladesh.
