Dhaka to get 4 new vegetable markets soon

STAFF REPORTER

Dhaka inhabitants are soon going to get fresh vegetables from four new markets to be set up in the capital, where farmers from the southern region will bring fresh fruits and vegetables from November 18. The Innovation and Incubation Centre for Enterprise (IICE) will organise a fair, ‘Saptahik Krishak Bazar’ (weekly peasants market), at four places in the capital. The IICE disclosed this at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) yesterday.  The first market will be opened at the AGB colony field in Motijheel during the fair on November 18 and 19. Later, it will be held at the Krishibid Institution in Farmgate on November 25 and 26, said IICE chief executive officer Reazuddin Mosharraf.
Two more vegetables fairs will be held at the Banani playground on December 2 and 3, while the last one will be organised at the Friends’ Club Field in Uttara Section 5 on December 9 and 10.  The two-day fair will be on from 8am to 6pm, Mosharraf said.  These peasant markets will be organised by Fresh Mart, in association with the Agriculture Value Chain (AVC) of USAID.  “The main objective of the fair is to bring the agricultural produce of farmers from the southern region of the country to consumers in the capital,” AVC deputy team leader Shoib Iftikhar told the press conference. There is a shortage of fresh vegetables in the city markets, Iftikhar said, adding that most vendors frequently sprinkle additives to keep the vegetables fresh.  “The consumers regularly buy the toxin-laced vegetables and fruits without knowing it. As a result, farmers are being deprived of profits,” he pointed out. Bangladesh Organic Products Manufacturing Association president Abdus Salam also spoke on the occasion.
