Under Chandika Hathurusingha’s tutelage, Bangladesh became a potent force in the limited version cricket but without a Test victory against a major cricket nation, the success wasn’t something to be highly rated.
As England progressed unscathed, reaching 100 for loss by tea in pursuit of 273, Hathurusingha looked angry in front of the dug out. It is believed that the coach told the Mushfiqur Rahim and company something which awakened the killer instinct inside them and later the rest was history.
Mushfiqur later admitted coach told them something what inspired them to deliver the victory. Hathurusingha himself revealed he was not satisfied by the way Bangladesh was playing against England. He though didn’t disclose actually what he said to stir them during the tea break. Yesterday there was occasion when Hathurusingha could feel him as the most successful coach of Bangladesh after his side secured a 108-run victory over England to prove that they have really come off age.
By doing so, Bangladesh also gave fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh a massive birthday gift on his just second series with the country. The legendary Caribbean fast bowler turned 54 yesterday.
“If we play Test cricket regularly, the margin could be 2-0,” said Hathurusingha after the victory. “We are not enough experienced to deal the tough situation. In this Test series we learnt a lot. We knew how to handle the pressure moment.” Hathurusingha heaped praise on his spinners, saying that they executed the plan well.
“Mehedi Hasan Miraj is an exceptional talent. He is keen to learn. He always sits beside the coaches and hears eagerly what they say. He is an attentive learner, I must say. It’s no surprise that he would be successful,” he said.
“He bowled exceptionally and got the support from Shakib and Taijul. The wicket also assists them but you have to land it right area. Otherwise you can’t expect a wicket. That’s what they did.”
