Alastair Cook, Test captain of England, praises the development of Bangladesh, stating that they made a significant progress over the last couple of year but they have to work hard to fare well on bouncy wickets.
“Bangladesh have obviously taken big strides,” said Alastair Cook. “We’ve played them on totally different wickets. Last time the wickets were flatter, they didn’t spin as much, or games going five days. They’ve decided that’s the way they want to be brave and try to win the game,” Cook told media at the post-match briefing.
“They’ve got some good spinners. But we’ve seen some improvement over the past couple of years. They’ll find it hard on bouncy wickets. But in these conditions they’re a good start,” he added.
Expressing his surprise to change the behavior of wickets, the English captain said that the scenario has been abruptly changed in the second session after the well-tuning first session of the match.
“100 for 0 was a really good session. I was really pleased with the way Ben played. He’d never done that against the new ball. He’s worked out a method in both defending and attacking in a good way. I thought he played really well and that’s a good sign,” he said.
“Yeah, it was amazing how things can turn. We possibly showed our inexperience in those conditions, even though I as out there experiencing it – it was amazing the difference before tea and after tea.”
“You lose a couple of wickets, then men come round the bat, crowd get into it – being able to deal with and get through it – you know it doesn’t last forever, but that half an hour, 40 minutes is crucial, and we just weren’t good enough to be able to get through,” the 32-year-old batsman said. Cook, who played 135 Tests for England, where he capped in 54, admits that it is really tough to play well on spinning wickets against experienced local spinners.
“I’ve had some tough ones. I thought 270 would have been a real good chase to be honest, They got 30 too many today. We had four or five, not easy chances, but chances you need to take I started the rot with one at leg slip – you need to take them, especially in low-scoring games,” the most experienced player in English side, said.
