Nazmul takes over as new envoy to UK
Md Nazmul Quaunine on Friday took over the charge as new Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He succeeds MA Hannan who went on retirement recently, according to Bangladesh High Commission in London. Nazmul served as Bangladesh Ambassador to Indonesia before taking up his new assignment.
Besides being the Bangladesh Ambassador to Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he also served in Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva and Bangladesh High Commissions in Islamabad and London in various capacities. He belongs to the 1985 batch of BCS (Foreign Affairs) Cadre and obtained an MBBS from Dhaka Medical College.

Building catches fire 
A fire broke out on the ground floor of a building beside Ittefaq building in city’s Karwan Bazar area yesterday.
Fire service sources said the fire broke out around 13:40 pm on the ground floor of the building and spread soon.
On information, four firefighting units rushed in and brought the blaze under control around 14:15 pm. The origin of the fire could not be known yet.

One held with firearm in Ctg
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a suspected terrorist along with a firearm from Ambagan in Chittagong city on Saturday night.
The arrestee was identified as Sohel, 23, son of Shafiqur Rahman, a resident of Senbagh upazila in Noakhali district.
Assistant director of RAB-7, assistant superintendent of police Chandan Debnath said based on secrete information that Sohel was staying at a house at Ambagan, the elite force conducted a drive there and arrested him.
During the drive, Rab members also recovered a shooter gun from Sohel.

1 killed in Barisal road crash
An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and its two passengers were injured as a bus hit the auto-rickshaw in Mahilara area on the Barisal-Dhaka highway of the district yesterday morning.
The deceased was Raihan Matubbar, 33, son of Kanchon Matubbar, a resident of Purba Bejehar village of the upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Gournadi Highway Thana SM Sahadat Hossain said the accident occurred when a bus hit the auto rickshaw from behind in the area, leaving auto driver Raihan dead on the spot and two other passengers injured. The injured were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Huge current net seized 
Mobile courts on Saturday seized 27,000-metre of current nets worth around Taka 10 lakh and over 80 kilograms of mother Hilsha fishes from different points of Padma River of the district.
The mobile courts comprising respective upazila nirbahi officers and upazila fisheries officers and accompanied by police teams conducted combing operation in different riverine areas under Godagari, Paba and Charghat upazila and seized the nets and fishes.
However, none could be arrested in this connection as the fishermen fled away leaving behind the nets and fishes.

Navy exercise concludes in Ctg
The five-day long sixth annual exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Bangladesh concluded at Naval Base Issa Khan in Chittagong on Saturday afternoon.
School of Welfare Maritime and Tactics organised the concluding function.
Commodore S A Mahmud, Fleeter commander of Bangladesh Navy, attended the concluding function as chief guest while US Defense Attache’ to Bangladesh Lieutenant Colonel P Kynez A Vhakaria, Commanders of Chittagong Naval area and high officials of Bangladesh  Army and Navy attended the function.

One held with yaba tablets 
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested a drug peddler with 8,000 pieces of yaba tablets from city’s Osmania Glass Sheet factory area under Chandgaon thana in the early hours of Saturday.
The arrested was identified as Mohammad Nurul Kabir, 54, son of Abdul Hoque, hailed from Taqnaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Chandgaon Thana Police set a check post and conducted a raid in front of Osmania Glass Sheet factory area under Chandgaon thana at 5 am today and arrested the drug peddler with the drug from a CNG three wheelers.
The police team also recovered the contraband drugs from the three wheelers passenger bag. Three cases were pending against him with different police stations.

30 arrested in capital 
The law enforcement agencies in its ongoing special anti-illegal drugs drives at different parts of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) area arrested 30 people for their alleged involvement in drug abuse during the last 36 hours, said a press release on Saturday.
“Different contraband items including Some 1,8,97 pieces of yaba tablets, 126 grams of heroin, 4.11 kgs of cannabis (ganja), 206 pieces of Buprenorphine injections, 100 bottles, one liter phensidyl, 48 cane bear and 40 bottles of local wine were seized from them,” the release added.

Five students get scholarship 
Five meritorious girls students received bank chaques of scholarship worth Taka 2,100 each for improving their science education here on Saturday.
They get the scholarship money through ‘Science Education Development in Secondary Schools Project’ in a function held in head office of Centre for Capacity Building of Voluntary Organisations (CCBVO) in the metropolis.
The recipient students, Fariha Afrin from Bhatopara School, Sabiha Khatun from Rajabari High School, Salma Khatun from Gogram School, Astina Parveen from Pirijpur School and Shimla Khatun from Chabbishnagar School and College, will spend the money for purchasing science apparatus like calculator, practical notebook and other necessary purposes.
