Having some 18,255 km of countrywide roadways to cover, Postal Department is equipped with only three vehicles forcing it to hire vehicles from private operators, reports UNB.
According to sources at the Postal Department, the mail services of its three land routes—Dhaka-Rajshahi, Khulna-Barisal and Khulna-Satkhira—that encompass 18,255 km roadways every day are mostly being carried by vehicles hired from private sector.
The rest of the department’s mail services are being carried through 4,476km railways, whereas 2,498km waterways through steamers and 45,334 km distance through 1,559 departmental and 5,961 extra-divisional runners.
For its huge dependence on rail, steamers and runners, the government mail services has virtually turned out to be motionless compared to the private sector operations. The sources also informed that across the country, about 1,100 courier service companies are running business regionally centering major cities while most of the big companies of the private courier services are working as agents of the Postal Department.
The government has already issued licenses to 131 mail and courier services. Among those, SA Paribahan is equipped with 522 vehicles, Sundarban Courier Service with 350, Janani Courier Service with 72, Korotoa with 27, Rainbow Courier Service with 48, Agradut Courier Service with 28, and Continental Courier Service with 184.
Contacted, State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim admitted that the dependence on other government and private institutions has been a major reason for the sorry state of the mail services of the Postal Department. The junior minister said that the government is working on a plan to modernise and strengthen the postal transport service and several projects are in the offing.
Director General of the Postal Department Prabash Chandra Saha told UNB that the government has taken a project, titled ‘Empowerment of Postal Transportation Service’, for strengthening the service.
