A light to heavy shower in on the weather forecast as Bangladesh take on England in the second and final Test today at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, eying to build on the positive vibe, gained from the first game. The hosts narrowly missed out on winning the first test after England beat them by 22 runs in Chittagong. Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim however said they don’t want to miss it out if they get into winnings position once again in the second test.
“Our challenge will be to play consistently, especially against a side like England,” Mushfiqur said. “We wouldn’t have become the No 1 team in the world by beating England in Chittagong. Still we want to do well over four to five days in a Test, and afterwards if we get into a winning position like the first test, we will push on.”
Mushfiqur will play his 50th Test as the third Bangladeshi player after Habibul Bashar and Mohammad Ashraful and the captain wants to make it memorable.
“It feels really good. It’s not easy to play 50 Tests for Bangladesh and I want to thank God. I will try to play well individually and that we get a good result,” he said. Debutant offspinner Mehedi Hasan took six 80, second best bowling figure by Bangladesh bowler on debut and left arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan claimed five for 85 in the second innings as Bangladesh spinners found the Chittagong wicket particularly to their likings.
They got turn and bounce aplenty from the first morning to keep England tatters. A similar kind of wicket, Rahim said his team would love to get but the consistent rain, caused by the low pressure of Bay of Bengal, kept them finger crossed.
“The rain might have some impact on our plans. But the wicket is mostly prepared but if the sun was out today, it would have dried up further. If there’s a bit of moisture, the ball would be gripping on the surface for the spinners.” England captain Alastair Cook however was aware that Bangladesh would play to its strength.
“You don’t look too much into stats but historically Dhaka spins less than Chittagong. I have a feeling that might not be the case in this game, I think Bangladesh have decided their spinning route as a home advantage and the same with Chittagong,” Cook said. “Chittagong was normally a high-scoring game and it wasn’t so high-scoring. I would expect this to turn.” Left arm spinner Zafar Ansari, a Cambridge graduate who has just finished 40,000-word thesis will make his Test debut, with pace bowler Steven Finn replacing Stuart Broad, as England would make two changes from the first test, Cook confirmed. “Zafar’s going to make his debut coming in for Gareth and Finny’s coming in for Broady,” Cook said Ansari’s inclusion will mean that Cook has a left-arm spinner, an off-spinner in Moeen Ali and a leg-spinner in Adil Rashid at his disposal.
