One part ‘Good Will Hunting,’ one part ‘Bourne Identity,’ ‘The Accountant’ stars Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a math genius whose autism and past traumas keep him isolated and disconnected from people. However this accountant also offers his services to some of the most dangerous criminal organisations in the world.
When Wolff takes on a legitimate client, his discovery sets in motion a series of events that involve hired hit men, the Treasury Department’s investigation, as well as a number of other plot twists that are slowly revealed throughout the films two hour run-time. ‘The Accountant’ has several sub plots that when thrown in with flashbacks to Wolff’s childhood, become a bit convoluted by the time the narrative’s questions are answered.
This is one of those movies that has very compelling characters, solid performances across the board, and confident direction, but unfortunately the script has too many outlandish twists that feel as though they were built just to surprise the audience rather than serving the actual story.
However, there is a lot about this movie that works superbly. Ben Affleck delivers a great performance that’s subtle, very subdued, and creates a character the audience can connect with despite his stoicism. The supporting cast which includes JK Simmons, Anna Kendrick, and Jon Bernthal all have particularly great scenes as well. Director Gavin O’Connor creates some impressive action set pieces and fight choreography that feel much more authentic than your typical action fare. But the movie wants to be equal parts character study drama and shoot-’em-up action flick, and that’s where it falters.
Now I was never bored and I was entertained for the most part, but in my opinion, and really that’s all these ever are, just one man’s opinion, ‘The Accountant’ could have been a great movie with this same cast, this same director, but it settles for being good enough. I give ‘The Accountant’ a B-.
