Form body to pick members

BNP urges AL

The BNP has called upon the new committee of the Awami League (AL), headed by Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, to take steps to form a search committee, based on the opinion of all stakeholders, to select members of the new Election Commission (EC). “We urge the government to form an acceptable Election Commission,” BNP senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said at a press conference at the party's central office at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday. He also called upon the AL committee to take the initiative to hold free, fair and acceptable national elections under a neutral government. Rizvi’s comments come two days after the AL council at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday and Sunday. He said it seems that hanging onto power by holding "bloodstained" elections was the main theme of the national council of the Awami League.
The BNP leader referred to the speech of AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that “the AL has to return to power by any means, and the BNP will not be allowed to come to power.” “The matter was highlighted in the speech of the AL president at their council session. Countrymen also believe it,” he said. The BNP leader criticised the newly-elected AL general secretary, Obaidul Quader, for his statement that the BNP had made a mistake by boycotting the January 5 polls, and that it would lose its way in the quicksand of time.
“These statements prove that the AL will play the role of encroacher in the next general election by holding it under AL rule, ignoring public opinion,” he added. Rizvi alleged that BNP leaders and activists are being implicated in false cases on a large scale. He said the nation did not get anything from the AL council to be optimistic about restoration of democracy in the country. Rather, the comments of the ruling party leaders reflected their autocratic and despotic attitude. BNP chairperson’s adviser, Abdus Salam, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Abdus Salam Azad, Taiful Islam Tipu and others were present at the press conference.
