Just one bridge in Tahirpur can make a big difference

Sunamganj: The residents of about 100 villages in Tahirpur upazila have to face a great deal of hardship in transporting their farm produces to the region’s agricultural hub at Badaghat as their demand for constructing a bridge over the Kendua River on BIDC road has fallen on deaf ears, reports UNB.The BIDC road was constructed for the plying of vehicles carrying limestone to the cement factory at Chhatak before the country’s independence, linking it to a regional road of Sumanganj for establishing a connection with Takerghat limestone mine project.With the passage of time, a big portion of the road was breached open and eroded by the river due to concurrent flashfloods, villagers alleged.The people of about 100 villages in Babaghat, Borodal Uttar, Borodal Dakhshin, Sripur Uttar unions have been suffering much following the problem shabby condition of the road.
Many a time over the last 35 years, they have raised the demand for building a bridge on Borokhara-Kaukandi Kheya­ghat over the Kendua River, flowing between Borodal Uttar and Borodal Dakhshin unions as it is an important route for the transportation of agricultural produces, but the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is yet to take any step regarding this.
Abul Kashem, chairman of Borodal Uttar union parishad, said, “I’ve already highlighted on occasions the importance of the bridge at monthly meetings of the upazila LGED office, but they didn’t give much importance to it.”
Khasrul Alam, chairman of Sripur Uttar union parishad, said the people of the union now need to cross 20-25 km for reaching Badaghat via Takerghat border road, taking too much of their time and causing enormous sufferings to them.Shah Md Abdul Wadud, engineer of the upazila LGED office, said once the road was known as BIDC road, but currently it is marked by the LGED as Anwarpur-Badaghat-Kaukandi-Takerghat road.
Wadud said they will send a proposal to the higher authorities after a visit to the area to assess the importance of a bridge in the area.
