The country office of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) would be set up in Bangladesh to conduct research in agricultural development, social protection and food and nutrition security issues, reports UNB. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the ministry of agriculture and IFPRI on Monday to this end, says a press release. Additional Secretary of agriculture ministry Mohammad Nazmul Islam and Director General of IFPRI Dr Shenggen Fan, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides. Currently, IFPRI’s main research program in Bangladesh is the Policy Research and Strategy Support Program for Food Security and Agriculture Development (PRSSP).
Working alongside government and development partners, the PRSSP aims to fill the need for demand-driven food and agricultural policy research in response to Bangladesh’s Country Investment Plan for agriculture, food security, and nutrition. “We are very excited to create a more permanent IFPRI presence in Bangladesh...The establishment of the country office demonstrates IFPRI’s enduring commitment to enhancing food security and reducing poverty in Bangladesh,” said Dr Fan after signing the MoU. He said the IFPRI research has provided vital original research and data on food security, gender, nutrition, and poverty in Bangladesh.
“We look forward to working with the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders to continue reducing hunger, poverty, and malnutrition, and increasing growth and opportunity,” he added.
