Local people at Saraipara under Phartali police station in Chittagong caught three fake journalists when they allegedly demanded extortion from a bakery owner impersonating themselves as journalists and handed them over to police after mob beatings yesterday.
The three were siblings and identified as Rabiul Islam, 23, Abu Hasan alias Mamun, 21, and Mahfuzur Rahman, 19, son of Shahadat Hossain, a truck driver, hailing from Satbaria upazila of Sirajganj district.
“They entered into Dhaka Bakery at Sarai para and started capturing picture of various goods at around 8am. When the owner of the bakery wanted to know their identity they said there was illegal goods in the bakery and demanded extortion. They also threatened to owner if he would not pay and picture would be published in media,” said Ranjit Kumar Barua, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phartali police station. “During the haggle between owner and the fake journalists carious people were gathered at the scene. At one stage of the haggle on doubt mob beat them up. On information a team of patrol police rushed to the spot and brought the fake journalist to the police station,” said the OC. “When contacted with the online news portal they said the trios are not their journalists,” added the OC.
“They were shown arrested and a case was lodged in this connection,” added the OC.
