Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reelected president of the ruling Awami League unopposed for the eighth consecutive time in the 20th national council of the party yesterday, reports UNB. The councillors of Awami League, one of the oldest political parties of the country, unanimously elected her president as there were no other candidates for the president post. Earlier, Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury proposed Hasina’s name for the post of president. Sheikh Hasina was first made the Awami League President in its council in 1981. Earlier, speaking at the council, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked Awami League leaders and activists to go to the doorsteps of people to convey them the message about the development activities her government has carried out as the next general election is approaching fast, reports UNB.
"Elections will be held in the coming days, it's must for us to go to the doorsteps of mass people if we want to win the next polls for the third consecutive time...we have to convey the message of development the Awami League government has carried out," she said. Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League chief, said this in her introductory speech on the second day of the party National Council at the auditorium of the Institute of Engineers. She stressed the importance of projecting the development programmes of the government that have been completed and are going to be completed, aimed at ensuring the welfare of people. “We’ve to convince the people that the country’s socioeconomic development needs to be maintained if AL wants to retain power,” she said. Sheikh Hasina also asked the party councilors to elect new leadership.“I want you (councilors) to come up with new leadership as long as I’m alive and put in efforts to make the party more dynamic. I’ve been party president for 35 years. Nobody remains in the post for such a long time,” she said.
In reply, the councilors stood up and shouted ‘no..no’ and chanted slogans in the name of Hasina. Later, she said, “Election is not taking place now. You can say this later. But it must be done. Now I am 70 years old. We have to keep it in mind.” “Awami League is my family and kith and kin. I didn’t give such a long time even to my children what I did for the party. I deprived my children of affection. I gave more time to you (party and party leaders and activists),“ she said in an emotion-chocked voice. Hasina asked the party leaders and activists to stay alert so that those who pampered the war criminals, those who killed people through arson attacks and involved in money laundering cannot come to power. “I want to see the honesty to prevail among the leaders and activists of Awami League ...I want to see its future leaders are elected to make the party even stronger,” she said. She directed the party leaders and activists to go to people to maintain the legacy of power for the country’s development. Hasina said Awami League returned to power through the December 2008 polls and retained it in the January 2014 election for the second successive term.
After the delivery of the AL president’s speech, presidents and general secretaries of district units delivered their speeches urging the PM to remain the party president. Motiur Rahman, general secretary of Lalmonirhat district unit, urged Hasina to induct her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the party’s working committee.
In reply, the party chief said Joy is already holding an important post as her adviser. Later, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, convener of Declaration Sub-Committee, presented a 46-page declaration before the councillors. Party president Hasina told the councillors that it will be considered as ‘passed’ if you say it as ‘passed’ and all shouted ‘yes..yes’. Pointing at the councillors, Sheikh Hasina asked them to submit in written if there is any proposal for the amendment to the declaration which will be considered in the next council. The Prime Minister reached the Institution of Engineers auditorium to join the last day of the party National Council at 9.40am. She was accompanied by party general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam. As many as 6,750 party councillors will choose the new leadership of the Awami League today.
