The coastal areas of Anwara upazila have become a major route for drug smuggling. Using fishing trawlers the smugglers are carrying drugs alarmingly from Teknaf and most of the residents of Teknaf are being involved with the drug peddling.
As drug smuggling has increased greatly in waterways it was discussed in Divisional Law and order committee meeting yesterday. The participants of the meeting urged to take necessary steps to stop drug smuggling using the route without any delay. The speakers of the Divisional Core Committee and Taskforce Committee meeting held yesterday expressed their concern over drug smuggling using the route. The three meetings were presided by Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Ruhul Amin while representatives from different agencies were present.
Additional Divisional Commissioner Sankar Shaha said that in the three meetings drug smuggling and human trafficking were discussed.
“Recently a committee investigated about the link of drug smuggling. The committee visited Cox’s Bazar and submitted their report. According the report, the fishermen of the trawlers without catching fish are being involved in drugs smuggling. It was informed to Ministry of Home Affairs. The ministry also sent an order to the departments concerned to take steps to stop the smuggling,” said Sankar Shaha.
“It directed to all the concern authorities to keep under vigilance all the trawlers of Anwara costal area,” added Sankar Shaha.
