Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives to Awami League leaders, activists and public representatives to make a list of poor people in their respective areas to ensure their welfare to make Bangladesh a poverty-free country is befitting of the president of a political party which has been at forefront of the struggle for the emancipation of the people of this country. While addressing the inaugural session of the party’s 20th council at Suhrawardy Udyan she said that her party’s goal was to free Bangladesh from poverty. Indeed a poverty-free Bangladesh is a dream which every party should share. And Awami League and the government it leads have been striving hard to make this dream a reality.
It has always been observed that the expectation of the people from Awami League is always high. And there are reasons for it. Established at the historic Rose Garden in the old quarters of Dhaka, it has over the years turned into a mass organization of the people of the country by leading all the democratic-political-social-cultural movements including the long and hard freedom struggle and the glorious Liberation War. It has also been devoted to the concept of secularism which is ethos of the constitution of this republic.
We believe that development and democracy are complementary to each other. All democracy lovers should laud Awami League (AL) for moves to continue democratization of the party, that is, election of the party hierarchy through votes of councilors. Unfortunately, most major political parties in Bangladesh are not particularly known to hold regular national councils to infuse a sense of continuity, direction and dynamism into their organisations. It is democracy which was the very basic foundation stone of the Awami League. And the relative political stability in the last few years has helped the government stimulate economic growth.
Effective and integrated effort of the grand alliance government led by Awami League has resulted in the increase of national income and allocation of national budget even in the backdrop of world economic recession. On the overall economic front, the Awami League government has been maintaining an impressive growth rate.
Meanwhile, the per capita income has already reached $1466 and the foreign currency reserve stands $30 billion. The government has been progressing steadily towards materializing the vision-2021. The country has also shown success in attaining Millenium Development Goals and moved to the status of lower middle income country from low income country. Besides, progress has been achieved in different sectors including agriculture, education and health.
