Kidnapped girl murdered
Sirajganj: The body of a minor girl who was kidnapped 16 days ago from her house was recovered in Jamtola area in Kamarkhand upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Jannatul, 5, daughter of Anwar Hossain, a resident of the area.
Babul Sarder, officer-in-charge of Kamarkhand Police Station, said Jannatul was kidnapped from the area on October 7. Later, her father filed a general diary with the police station. Police arrested two men in this connection on Friday night. According to their statement, police recovered the body from a well in the area yesterday morning.
Woman’s body found in river
Sunamganj: A female quarry worker was found dead in the Surma River in Wagekhali area of Sunamganj municipality on Friday afternoon, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Shabana Begum, 25, wife of Azizur Rahman, a resident of Rubber Bari village of Laxmanshri union of the upazila.
Local people spotted her body in the river around 3pm and informed police. Later a team of police led by Pabitra Kumar Sinha, sub-inspector of Sadar Model Police Station, went to the spot and recovered the body with the help of locals. The body was sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Harun-ur Rashid Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Shabana went missing as a stone-laden boat capsized in the river on October 12.
16 jailed for catching hilsa
PABNA: A mobile court on Friday sentenced 16 fishermen to one year’s imprisonment each for catching hilsa defying the government imposed ban, reports BSS.
Upazila fisheries department conducted a drive from Thursday night to Friday morning in the Padma River of Sujanagar upazila and arrested the fishermen. They also seized 30,000 meters current net and 100-kg of hilsa fish.
The detained fishermen were produced before the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain who handed down the verdict.
Later, the seized hilsa were distributed among local orphanages and the current nets were burnt. The government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa from October 12 to November 2.
Smuggled clothes seized
RANGPUR: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized huge smuggled clothes along with a pick up van from the Hili-Sonapur road near Hili frontier under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur yesterday morning, reports BSS.
According to BGB sources, a patrol team from Hili Check Post BGB Camp conducted a raid there and seized the vehicle with 819 pieces of smuggled three-pieces packed in eight plastic sacks. The BGB members also arrested driver of the pickup van Abdus Salam, 26, of Khalishagari village under Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat, from the spot.
Exhibition held in Shariatpur

A solo book exhibition of Bangla Academy award winner writer Dr Hafizuddin Ahmed was held at Monwara Sikder Medical College (MSMC) in Modhupur of Shariatpur recently.
Dr Hafizuddin Ahmed is principal and head of the Department of Anatomy and Surgery of MSMC.
Playwright Mannan Sikder inaugurated the exhibition.
Books titled ‘SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in the world’, ‘Ostropocharer Kola-Koushal’, ‘Tibro Udoramoy’ published by WHO-Geneva were displayed in the exhibition. Besides, documents on Dr Hafiz, letter of appreciation for anti-racism story from Nelson Mandela and a number of books were displayed in the exhibition.
Proctor of English dept of ZH Sikder University of Science and Technology (ZHSUST) Nurul Karim Nasim was attended the programme as chief guest. Tahmina Nishat-assistant registrar of ZHSUST and Dr Quamruzzaman, associate professor of Physiology, recited poems from his book.
