Stokes steals Shakib show

Ben Stokes produced a superb all-round performance to leave Bangladesh in cornered state in the first Test as England apparently took a control over the game yesterday at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Stokes ripped through Bangladesh in a display of fine reverse-swing to claim four for 26, including three in the third day’s morning to help the side gain 45-run lead by bowling the hosts out for 248. Then his restrained, yet aggressive 85-run helped England end the third day 228 for eight, stretching the lead to 273 -- a significant advantage on a pitch offering turn and variable bounce aplenty. Bangladesh’s highest chase in fourth innings in winning cause is 217 for six against West Indies in 2009. Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad were undefeated on 11 and 10, respectively. Stokes and Jonny Bairstow combined for a 127-run partnership after England was stuttering on 62 for five. Bairstow made 95-ball-47,
with six fours, which helped him become the highest run-scorer as a designated wicketkeeper in a calendar year, eclipsing Andy Flower’s 1,045.
Shakib Al Hasan claimed his 15th five-for, returning figures of five for 79 but he played a rash shot in the second ball of the day to open the gate for the England to dominate the proceeding. Bangladesh survived just 12 overs to add 27 runs to their overnight total of 221 for five.
Off-spinner Moeen Ali started the rot as Shakib threw away the wicket with overnight score of 31. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid then got nightwatchman Shafiul for 2 after which Stokes’ reverse-swing burst accounted for three debutants — Mehedi Hasan (1), Sabbir Rahman (19) and Kamrul Islam for duck in the space of just nine runs.
