I feel the pain when AL gets hurt: Ashraf

Awami League (AL) general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday expressed his profound emotions for the party and his allegiance to party president Sheikh Hasina at the party’s 20th national council held at the Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. He said he was the son of the AL and feels the pain whenever the party gets hurt. Ashraful, who is currently serving the party for two terms, said conspiracies were hatched to destroy the party but those failed. The party will not be destroyed, he said. “The Awami League is not only a party. It is a feeling. It is not a traditional party. AL has liberated the country. There are many parties in the world but their sacrifices cannot be compared with those of the AL. It is one of the best political parties in

the world for its sacrifices,” he said. “I was the party general secretary for two terms. There was no schism in AL. Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, I worked with millions of its leaders and workers for five years on the path shown by her. Today, our party is more powerful than it has ever been,” he said.
“There have been many conspiracies in the country to destroy the AL. Our Bangabandhu was assassinated. Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Syed Mansur Ali were killed. Thousands of our leaders and workers were killed. But the AL was not destroyed. It is not possible,” he added.
Showing allegiance to Hasina, he said, “While she is here, she will lead us. But when she is not, the AL will not die. There is no political organisation in the world that has sacrificed so much for the country and its people. We are the inheritor of that blood. You are also the inheritor of the blood. Our blood is pure and tested.”
About his feelings for the AL, he said, “I have never thought of this party as an organisation. It is a feeling. The feelings that have been created through movement and struggle are called Awami League.”
He said the AL is moving forward and it would go ahead. Under Hasina’s leadership, the country will one day turn into a golden Bangla, he added. “If we are united, no power in the world will be able to destroy the Awami League,” he said. Ashraful said, “I am the son of the Awami League. I was born in the house of the AL. When the AL gets hurt, I feel hurt. If one AL worker feels pain, I feel the same pain, because my blood and your blood are the same. There is no hesitation, no division in it.”
He said that the country is moving forward under the leadership of Hasina and urged all to be united with the one pulse of ‘Bangabandhu’. “I remember him (Bangabandhu) today. Come, let us strengthen Bangabandhu’s Awami League,” he said. He said this council is a historic event and epoch-making decisions would be taken here.
