RANGPUR: Safer use of roads through creating public awareness along with ensuring professional skill of drivers and strict enforcement of traffic rules could reduce road accidents saving thousands of human lives annually, reports BSS.
The views were expressed at a post-rally discussion organised by district unit of 'We Want Safe Road (Nirapod Sarak Chai-NSC)' in observance of the 'National Road Safety Day- 2016' on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city on Friday. Earlier, a huge rally participated by hundreds of people, including government officials, professional drivers, human right activists, leaders of road transport workers and owners' associations, rovers, scouts and students, paraded the city streets. With district unit President of NSC Dr Zillur Rabbi in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar addressed the discussion as the chief guest. Additional District Magistrate (ADM) AKM Maruf Hassan addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
General Secretary of district unit of NSC Sajjad Swadhin blamed inadequate skill of some drivers, faulty vehicles, road conditions, roadside hat-bazaars, using mobile phones while driving as main reasons behind road accidents.
"Drying of various crops on roads, illegal occupation of roads, lack of adequate awareness among common people and pedestrians and overtaking on competition basis are other major causes behind road accidents," he added.
