A two-day international media conference ended in the capital yesterday discussing how media and humanitarian organisations can work better together, reports UNB.
Media professionals from 11 Asia-Pacific countries attended the Asia Media Conference 2016 titled ‘Reporting Humanitarian Emergencies and Crisis’ and presented their advice and experiences.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) jointly hosted the event.
“It’s important for journalists and humanitarian workers to interact as we regularly meet on the ground,” said Head of ICRC Delegation in Bangladesh Ikhtiyar Aslanov while welcoming the participants.
Aslanov said such events hope to give media professionals the space to discuss, debate and deliberate on the constraints and challenges they face while reporting from situations of conflict and violence.
“Workshops with media professionals have been promoted by the ICRC in Bangladesh and we’ve learned more about reporting on humanitarian emergencies and crisis,” said DCAB President Angur Nahar Monty.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam inaugurated the conference on Friday.
Journalists from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Australia and Indonesia deliberated about challenges to responsible and humanitarian journalism and threats and opportunities at the age of new media and innovation.
This conference was the seventh regional media conference that the ICRC has been conducting in Asia since 2006. It was the second time that it was held in Dhaka, said the ICRC.
The ICRC has been providing humanitarian services for over 150 years and is present in more than 80 countries, it said.
