30 jailed for defying ban on catching hilsa

Thirty fishermen were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in Faridpur and Manikganj for catching hilsa defying the ongoing ban.
In Faridpur, a mobile court yesterday morning sentenced nine fishermen to 10 days’ imprisonment each for catching hilsa defying the ban, reports UNB.
Executive magistrate Sumon Chandra Das said a team led by him conducted a drive from Wednesday night to Thursday morning in the Padma River, along different areas of Sadar upazila, and arrested nine fishermen.
The team also seized three mounds of hilsa fish and 90,000 metres of current nets.
Later, the mobile court sentenced each of the detained fishermen to 10 days’ imprisonment.
Our Manikganj correspondent adds: A mobile court on Wednesday sentenced 21 fishermen to one year’s imprisonment each and fined six others for catching hilsa in the Jamuna River defying the ongoing ban.
A team of Daulatpur upazila fisheries department conducted a drive in the Jamuna River and arrested 27 fishermen while catching hilsa fish early in the morning, said Daulatpur upazila fisheries officer Monowar Hossain.
They also recovered 50 kgs of hilsa fish and 20,000 metres of current nets from their possession. Later, the arrestees were produced before a mobile court, led by executive magistrate Shafiur Rahman which sentenced 21 fishermen to one year imprisonment and fined six others.
The government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa from October 12 to November 2.
