The body of a Rajshahi University (RU) student was recovered from a gutter beside Nabab Adul Latif Residential Hall around 8am yesterday. Two students were detained by the police in this connection. The deceased was identified as Motaleb Hosaain Lipu, a second-year student of the mass communication and journalism department (MCJ) and a resident of Nabab Aabdul Latif Hall, who hailed from Harinakundu upazila under Jhenaidah district. Prof. Bipul Kumar Biswas, provost of the Latif hall, said that Rina Akter, a worker at the hall, had first noticed the dead body and immediately told him about it. "Later, I informed the RU administration about the incident," he added. RU proctor Prof. Mujibul Haque Azad Khan told The Independent that Lipu was a resident of Room 253. "We've already asked his family to receive the dead body after autopsy," he said. Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station, said a worker spotted the body in the gutter behind the hall around 8am. "We've detained two students—Monirul Islam, a roommate of the deceased and a second-year botany student, and Prodip Kumar, a third-year management student," he added. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) assistant commissioner of police Amir Jafor said the body was sent to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) morgue for autopsy.
