The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday sought permission from the government for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan either on November 7 or 8 to observe ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ marking the "civil-military uprising” in 1975. “We've decided to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan either on November 7 or November 8 to mark 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day'. We hope that the administration will give us permission to hold the rally on any of the two days,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He was briefing reporters after a joint meeting held at the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in the city. Fakhrul alleged that the ruling Awami League (AL) was observing its political programme by using the state machinery. “We don’t want any such privilege but the minimum basic right to hold a rally. We hope that the government will extend its cooperation to us,” he said.
The BNP leader said the party would observe a 10-day programme to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day. When asked whether the BNP would attend the AL’s national council, Fakhrul said a decision in this regard would be taken at party forum. “We’re happy that they invited us. We had invited them to our council, but they didn’t come,” he said. Replying to a question, the BNP leader said the AL could have pioneered the culture of political etiquette by attending the BNP’s national council. Meanwhile, the AL yesterday invited BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to attend its 20th council on October 22–23 at Suhrawardy Udyan. An AL delegation, led by the party’s deputy office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, went to the BNP’s Naya Paltan central office about 11am and handed over two separate letters to the BNP secretary general.
