Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, also a presidium member of the ruling Awami League, may replace incumbent general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, party insiders have said. The notion came through after Wednesday night’s meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban. At the meeting, the party high command gave green signal to Quader’s candidature for the post and that he may be declared the party general secretary in the 20th national council scheduled to begin tomorrow, several central leaders told The Independent.
Previously, it was being assumed that there would be no change to the post of the general secretary of the ruling party and that incumbent general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam will be asked to carry on his responsibility. The sudden change of mind in the party high command resulted from the thoughts that Syed Ashraf would be entrusted with further more important responsibility, party leaders close to the high command have said. The Awami League (AL) will reportedly introduce major changes to its highest policymaking executive body—the Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC)—at the party’s 20th triennial central council scheduled on October 22–23.
AL organising secretary Abu Sayeed Al-Mahmud Swapan told this correspondent on Wednesday night, “As far as I know, Quader might be made the next party general secretary.” AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap also hinted that Quader was going to be elected as the party’s next general secretary at the council. Party sources said Ashraful might be made a presidium member of the party. In future, he might be offered ‘a very important position’. Ashraf was elected the general secretary for the first time at the 18th council session held on July 24, 2009. The party held its last (19th) council on December 29,
2012. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy might be made a member of the executive body of the party, said insiders. They also said that AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif will retain his position at the party. They said some new faces would be inducted into the new committee, while some elderly leaders may be dropped. At least 15 new faces with clean images will be introduced to the new committee. Earlier, Quader had told The Independent that some fresh faces will be inducted into the new executive committee, in line with the ‘Digital Bangladesh’ vision and in keeping with the demand of grassroots activists. Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the party’s executive committee currently has 73 members, which will be increased to 81. The party has also decided to include four posts in the presidium—one joint general secretary, one organising secretary, and two members of the central working committee. Sources said Hasina is expected to be elected unopposed as the president of the party.
