Bangladesh, as one of the 21 founding members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), actively promotes economic cooperation between itself, China, India and Myanmar. Bangladesh think tank scholars are also very positive about the Belt and Road initiative.
According to Mr. Muniruzzaman, president of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), Bangladesh experts and scholars show a very positive attitude towards the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) economic corridor. Many of these scholars believe friendly exchanges between China and Bangladesh have been going on since ancient times, and it is beneficial to all parties to strengthen regional cultural exchanges through the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) is one of the first Bangladesh think tanks to promulgate the BCIM economic cooperation initiative. “Geographically, Bangladesh will benefit most from the BCIM economic corridor. Each of the four countries has their own advantages. India has a strong ability for innovation, Bangladesh has sufficient labour force, China boasts advanced technology and productivity, and Myanmar is rich in natural resources. Once connected by the BCIM economic corridor, they are all sure to complement each other and be equally benefited,” said the CPD’s Senior Assistant Researcher, Kishore Kumar Basak.
With the continuous growth of Bangladesh’s total industrial exports, the Silk Road Economic Belt provides Bangladesh with important access to East and Northeast Asian markets. Further interconnection with Yunnan will open up huge markets for Bangladesh.
“First, through the economic corridor, Bangladesh will establish ties with Yunnan and open up the Southeast Asian market. Second, a complete production network will be set up, utilizing each country’s competitive advantages. The economic corridor will increase Bangladesh’s trade with China, as well as with other neighbouring countries,” Basak explains. (CRI)
