Why the spirit of the Long March so highly praised?

BY YAN BING

In July 1981, former US national security advisor Dr. Brzezinski and his family visited Sichuan and followed parts of the historic Long March. After their China tour, he penned an article entitled An American Family Retraces Mao’s Long March, in which he wrote “For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. It is the reminder of the spirit of national unity essential to overcome a legacy of backwardness.”

For American writer Harrison E. Salisbury, the Long March represented an “untold story of heroic men and women”. For American journalist Edgar Snow, it was a “thrilling epic”. British Field Marshal Montgomerie praised the Long March as “the greatest military epic of the century, an unparalleled human story of sheer dogged grit and determination”.

Over the past 80 years, many international friends have shown interest in the Long March. Many of them have also praised the Red Army’s heroic achievements. They believe that the spirit of the Long March is not only a sign of China’s national spirit, but also represents the spiritual strength of human beings across the world.

Why has the spirit of the Long March been so highly praised?

The answer lies in that the feat has much to do with human heroism. What doesn’t kill one makes one stronger. The Chinese Communists repeatedly tested and confirmed man’s ability to undergo indescribable hardship, overcoming every challenge placed in their paths by forces determined to thwart them. It was a triumph over enemies bent on destruction, but the Red Army reached its goal nonetheless.

All such stories have shown that the perseverance and dauntless heroism of the Red Army in the Long March has long moved beyond the time and space in which it took place. It has become a part of mankind’s spiritual strength.
