As of the year 2020, Yunnan’s railway mileage will total between 5,000 and 6,000 kilometres. Of this, 1,700 kilometres of track will be high-speed rail. By then, the province’s railway network will cover all prefectures and large cities.

For a long time, Yunnan suffers from the inadequate development of its railways. However, China’s has shifted priorities, and now central and western regions figure more prominently. According to China’s Long-Term Railway Network Planning, a total of 16 projects, with a total length of 3,878 kilometres, will be undertaken in Yunnan. Together, these projects are estimated to involve investment of about 291.6 billion yuan. Currently, Yunnan is building 14 railway projects totalling 2,560 kilometres. After the Shanghai-Kunming and the Yunnan-Guangxi high-speed railways open to traffic this year, Yunnan will officially enter a new era of high-speed railway transportation.

High-speed railway will be a major focus of Yunnan’s development in the years to come. By 2020, Yunnan’s high-speed rail mileage is expected to reach 1,700 kilometres. In addition to the province’s central regions, the high-speed rail network will also cover 60 percent of the top 50 counties in terms of GDP, 70 percent of the class 5A scenic areas and 60 percent of the class 4A scenic areas. By 2030, Yunnan’s railway connections with the major border land crossings to Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar will also take shape.
