If invited, BNP likely to join AL council

Staff reporter

If invited, a delegation of the BNP is likely to attend the inaugural session of the 20th national council of the ruling Awami League (AL) scheduled to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday and Sunday, according to a highly placed source.
“The BNP high command may send a high-level delegation led by its secretary general or a senior leader to attend the AL’s national council, if they receive an invitation from the ruling party,” said the source.
Although the AL sent no delegation to attend the BNP’s March 19 national council despite an invitation, the BNP high command wants to take a positive approach as a democratic gesture, the source added.
Talking to reporters earlier on Tuesday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir hailed the AL’s upcoming national council and hoped that it would pave the way for the restoration of democracy in the country. He also wished all the successes to the council.
BNP sources, however, said that they were yet to receive any invitation from the ruling party.
“So far as I know, the BNP chairperson did not receive any invitation letter,” the chairperson’s media wing officer Shairul Kabir Khan said yesterday.
BNP office sources said that they did not receive any invitation letter from the AL till yesterday afternoon.
When contacted, AL deputy office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das said they would invite the BNP to attend the council.
Replying to a question, he said the invitation letter would be sent to the BNP within a day or two.
“We will send it by today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday),” he said.
