Consulting firm to oversee work

The government yesterday signed an agreement with a consortium of six companies for the consultancy job of Karnaphuli Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in the port city of Chittagong, reports UNB.
Chief Engineer of Bridges Division Kabir Ahmed and SEC technical and management chief Gavin Harong Streed signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides.
Under the Tk 291-crore deal, the six companies will monitor the construction work and review designs of the tunnel.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader who was present at the deal signing ceremony said Chittagong will be turned into ‘one city, two towns’ model like Shanghai once the Karnaphuli Tunnel is implemented.
He said the proposed tunnel will connect the Mirsarai-Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive, proposed Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway and Chittagong-Cox’ s Bazar Highway.
The total length of the proposed tunnel will be nine kilometres, including a one-kilometre flyover, the minister said.
