Mushfiq wants Cook’s scalp early

Tigers captain pays tribute to his countrpart for his record Test
Sports Reporter, Chittagong

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim paid tribute to his opposite number Alastair Cook on the eve of the latter record breaking Test.

Cook will be England’s most capped Test player, breaking the record of Alec Stewart’s 133 matches when his side takes on Bangladesh today.
“He is a role model to any young player. The way he has played in the last 10/ 12 years, was fantastic,” Mushfiqur said.
And at the same time, he underlined the fact how little amount of Tests Bangladesh played. Cook made his debut in 2006 while Mushfiqur debuted in 2005 at Lords but he couldn’t play even half number of Tests that Cook played in the last 10 years.
“He debuted after me and still he played a 134 and I played only 48,” Mushfiqur pointed out but said their plan is to get rid of Cook quickly.
One of the main reasons for the debut of Mehedi Hasan Miraj is for Cook, sources said since the batsman has been in top of his game. The team management wants off-spinner Miraj to bowl against left hand Cook at the early of the innings, similar to the tactics they used against Chris Gayle by Sohag Gazi during West Indies’ visit to Bangladesh in 2012.
If they could account Cook early, Bangladesh could sense a chance in the turning wicket. Mushfiqur though didn’t go for details, he revealed, “He (Cook) will be one of the key players to get rid of early, so hopefully if we can execute out plans against him, we will be able to do that.”
The Bangladesh Test captain also urged the players of the two to play with good spirit as there was some issues during the ODI series. Even England’s Ben Stokes refused to shake hands with Abdul Majid during a preparation game in Chittagong which many believed he did as a result of that incident in ODI series.
“There were some hiccups in the ODIs but it has all become friendly. I hope us and the England team get back on the field spontaneously, not rudely,” said Mushfiqur.
“The only reason I did not keep was that my finger was injured. And with that you can keep for 10, 12, 50 overs but keeping for 100 overs is a different thing. Now I am fit, so if the team management wants, I will keep. I have kept and scored 200, and I have kept and scored zero too. So it doesn’t affect me. My main job is if I can keep and contribute according to the thinking of the team management, and if they think that the team will play well without me in the team, then all the better.”
Yesterday’s press conference was the first time that Mushfiqur talked to media after his that glory shot in the ICC World T20 which many believed caused Bangladesh’s heart-breaking one-run defeat to India.
Mushfiqur said, he stayed away from the media to concentrate more on his cricket.
“This has been to focus my concentration on my game. I have a responsibility and I thought that not thinking about other things and doing my own work well and devoting more time on and off the field on my game, there is not much else to it besides that. And of course, for the last year or so there have been no Tests, so we have not met.”
